Surprise Mail

Had you forgotten about my little snail mail experiment? I had. In fact I had almost entirely given up hope that anyone would come through for me. I got home from a long day of teaching last week, checked the mail and found this:

I thought absolutely nothing of it since I tend to get snail mail here and there from friends and family. I didn't pay attention to the post mark and thought maybe it was an invitation to a friend's wedding or something of the sort. So I opened the envelope...

...and I became very excited when I saw this:

WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

The first card had made its way back to my house! Its final route? Baltimore to Connecticut to Rhode Island to New York City to California and finally back to good old Charm City.

I am beyond thrilled that I got one of the ten cards back since I had quickly given up on the whole experiment. This has kept my hopes alive, and I'm crossing my fingers that I'll at least get one or two more in the mail. Of course, I will most definitely keep you all updated if another one come my way. Keep your fingers crossed for me! :)

Six Degrees of Separation in the Mail

Remember my request for volunteers for this fun little snail mail experiment? Well I finally got my butt in gear and have gotten all of the cards ready.

One crappy phone photo later, and there's proof that they're in the envelopes, addressed, and stamped. I'll be dropping them off in the blue post box tomorrow morning on my way to work. And while I only needed ten volunteers, I got a few more than that. However, I wanted to let everyone in on the fun so all that got in touch should find a card in their mailbox in the near future! I'm not quite sure what to expect, but I'm super excited to have finally got this experiment off of it's feet and traveling through the mail. And of course, I'll keep you updated on any news of progress I may receive on my end! Happy letter writing to all!

Six Degrees of Separation

In this day and age of email, twitter, facebook, and all of that other lovely social media, I've come to realize that we forget about snail mail. And to be honest, it's way more fun to get a letter or card in the mail than it is to see a facebook or twitter notification on your computer screen or phone. The postal service is pretty amazing to tell you the truth. Write a letter, stick a stamp on it, drop it into a post box, and a few days later it magically gets to its recipient.

I got to wondering just how far a card could travel. Now couple that with the fun game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. The end result? Six degrees of separation-- snail mail style. So I designed ten of these lovely cards.

Inside each card is a space to jot down your name, location, and a small note. Then you send the card on to another friend. My goal? Have each of these ten cards eventually make it back to me in Baltimore and see just how far they traveled. At first I thought I would just send ten of them to family or friends, but on second thought, I decided to open it up to my readers as well as it seemed I could diversify a bit that way.
